Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
