The Film's Peculiar Finale Unpacked
For those wanting a slasher-horror movie that provides mindless entertainment while making you wince, chances are Bone Lake has caught your attention. A recent scary film from filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan debuted in movie houses on October 3rd with an outlandish setup and a suggestive title to suit.
Heads-up: Spoilers ahead for the conclusion of Bone Lake.
A Blend of Levity and Terror
Given the title like Bone Lake and an introductory scene featuring characters sprinting stark naked through the wilderness—only to be shot with a crossbow in vulnerable spots—you'd be right there's plenty of comic relief all through the film. Additionally, the film's ending, which depict the central pair looking worse for wear yet chuckling madly together, carry a tone of dark humor.
One would have to seek out a cause to laugh about, too, if you experienced what the character Diego and Sage experience in Bone Lake. A couple riddled with partnership troubles from the beginning—lack of communication, disappointing physical relations, an disproportionate load of financial responsibility, and more—their connection is put to the test when additional characters, the character Will and the character Cin, invade their romantic weekend.
A Dark Turn
At first seeming to be a clash of contrasts between the duos—Sage and Diego are clumsy and working-class, whereas Cin and Will have a affluent, opulent lifestyle and are seen making out on any handy location—becomes sinister as the trip unfolds. Cin and Will manipulate Diego and Sage's insecurities in their partnership. They circulate falsehoods and rumors about the protagonists, stating to be aware of an cheating and further conflicts.
These doubts erupt in the most extreme way conceivable when Sage and Diego learn that Will and Cin are not merely here at Bone Lake accidentally: they are the owners and have been attracting duos to the estate in order to get them to be unfaithful on their partners. The reason? Since Will and Cin are truly siblings. After their forbidden relationship was found out by their family and they were split apart against their will, they resolved to punish all others (including their family). Given that the world turned against them just because of loving who they want, then they'll fight back at the world. Will and Cin's objective is to show a reflection to all the pairs they finally end up killing, in an attempt to show that their love is just as valid (or invalid) as the love of these other couples they try to break up.
Unexpected Strengths
Yet, what Will and Cin fail to consider is that Diego and Sage, despite their poor dialogue with one another, deeply value and adore each other. It required having a murderous couple try to end their relationship and kill them to see it. While it appears grim, it is not shown that way. Bone Lake's mood is more camp than actual fear.
The story concludes with Sage and Diego teaming up to escape Will and Cin's murderous intentions. What's interesting is that while, at the outset of the film, you perceive a huge gap in the partnership between Sage and Diego in relation to Will and Cin, by the conclusion, Bone Lake flips it upside down. Cin and Will split up to chase Diego and Sage, but Diego and Sage are communicating better now. They team up to slay the character Will with a power tool. They then turn on Cin, who dies horribly at the depths of Bone Lake's body of water—but only after Diego retrieves the wedding ring meant for Sage that Will had swiped and given to the character Cin.
Aftereffects
After all the chaos of their pair of slayings, smeared with bodily fluids, Sage and Diego sit together on the end of a vessel. Unexpectedly, this is the most intimate they've felt since the start of the story, given that all their relationship troubles have been exposed for each of them to see, and all they have left are their injured and sore physiques. As though to reinforce their new closeness and deep connection of one another, the character Diego leans over to slip the engagement band on the character Sage's finger and, when she looks to inspect it in the sunlight, the two start chuckling.
It's easy to see why: When, Will proposed to the character Cin, it was a idyllic, affectionate instant. When the character Diego repeats the act for the character Sage, they've recently escaped from a brutal nightmare. Nonetheless, Diego's proposal to the character Sage is not based on falsehoods, just the understanding that they've come out of the most horrific event of their lives and, despite everything, they yet wish to share the remainder of their days as one.
Director's Insight
However, as filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan explains, the ending is not a guarantee of a fairy-tale ending for Diego and Sage.
"After enduring that situation with someone where you face a deadly massacre, how do you emerge from that? What do you do as a human being? Therefore I sought to show all of the instants there as one where it's this euphoria of 'thank God' and 'have we obtained what we've always wanted, but what the fuck transpired? How in the world do we do at this point?' And just that sinking in of the situation of 'how does this affect for us {now|today|from
