Poland Deploys Fighter Aircraft as Russia Targets Ukrainian regions near Poland
Russia pounded Ukrainian territory with aerial assaults overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, concentrating on the key western urban center of Lviv region.
Ukraine's neighbour Poland scrambled combat aircraft to guarantee the security of their national airspace, the national defense forces announced. Allied Nato aircraft were similarly activated.
Lviv's regional head local authorities confirmed two people were killed in attacks in the region, and two more injured.
In other developments, Russian forces again targeted energy infrastructure - and one was struck in an nocturnal assault on Zaporizhzhia region, where the city official reported an individual lost their life and more than 73,000 people were lacking power.
Military Response
These attacks came shortly following a American representative indicated the United States would endorse Ukrainian forces launching deep strikes within Russia's borders.
"Our and partner nations' jets are active in Polish skies, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been activated at maximum alert level," Poland's operational command said.
At 05:10, all of Ukraine was placed on high alert following air defense warnings of incoming aerial threats.
Energy System Attacks
Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Lviv's mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported part of the city - 43 miles from the border with Poland - had no power, adding that the city's air defence systems were engaged heavily in repelling first a UAV and then a Russian missile attack.
As of 07:30, multiple areas were experiencing outages and municipal transit was yet to start running, with Sadovyi stressing that it was "dangerous to venture outdoors".
In Zaporizhzhia, the nocturnal assault left "more than 73,000 consumers... without electricity", according to regional officials.
One person was fatally wounded, and nine injured, authorities said.
A 16-year-old girl was among those receiving medical assistance, officials noted, releasing images apparently showing a damaged apartment building and a destroyed vehicle from the impact location.
Wider Consequences
Municipal transit in Ivano-Frankivsk, would "begin operations with delay" on Sunday, its city administration announced.
The series of attacks were part of Russia's threats against the whole of Ukraine during the night.
At around early morning, Ukraine's Air Force warned the entire territory was under the threat of fresh Russian missile attacks, following prolonged alert periods and notifications of aerial assaults.
Territorial Control
Russian forces have occupied most of the Donbas area, including key eastern cities.
Russia presently holds around a fifth of Ukraine's land, including the Crimean peninsula, which it annexed in 2014.
Global Developments
In Russian territory, anti-aircraft systems eliminated multiple UAVs during the night, media outlets reported on Sunday morning.
Recently, a American diplomat said that the US would support Ukrainian forces conducting long-range operations inside Russian territories.
Meanwhile, a different NATO country - Lithuania - had to suspend flights temporarily after unidentified items were detected.
Lithuania halted air traffic at its largest and busiest Vilnius airport for multiple hours, before reopening it at 04:50 on Sunday.
The aviation authorities stated the operational pauses and diversions were "because of a possible series of aerial objects heading toward the aviation facility".
