Live Match Coverage
21st Minute: Fierce Play as Both Teams Compete
21 mins: Brisbane advance to the midfield and almost pierce the opposition defense via Walsh and Shibasaki on the left side. A further superb kick from Reynolds on the last tackle maintains the Broncos' momentum. For three tackles they remain on the front foot, but a couple of offloads release the rapid Jahrome Hughes, and when he's brought down on the defensive 40m line, a six-again is awarded for holding the player. The Storm are finding their flow, and William Warbrick breaks through the defense, followed by Coates making a dash – only for Walsh to catch him high with a shoulder! Could that be a yellow card? Not according to the referee, says Atkins, because Coates was dropping low. The fullback is placed on report regardless, and Melbourne resume their attack.
19 mins: Munster Leads Storm Offense
19 mins: Munster is busy as Melbourne move quickly down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Hughes lofts a kick, Katoa sprints forward, but in the marking contest, the forward loses the ball, and the Broncos at last get a breather.
18th Minute: Storm Exert Pressure on Brisbane
18 mins: The Storm execute a textbook set from the kickoff and apply significant pressure on Mariner with the last tackle kick. Once more, the Brisbane fail to reach the midfield in response, and Adam Reynolds is forced to kick long to keep his team in touch.
17 mins: Injury for Melbourne
17 mins: It’s not all good news for Melbourne. Jack Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin issue. Wishart is entering in his position.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Broncos (Katoa, 15)
Spectacular, just brilliant. After back-to-back restarts, Brisbane are tiring. From tackle three near the try line on the left side, Melbourne send the ball infield for two passes before Jahrome Hughes kicks it off the ground and the charging Katoa times his charge perfectly to dive on the bobbling ball and stand to mark his side's second touchdown!
From just to the right of the posts, Nick Meaney converts his second goal.
12 mins: Melbourne Show Thrilling Offense
12th minute: Melbourne look thrilling in attack. They have pace from the ruck, grunt from the forwards, and crisp hands from the backs. A threatening move concludes with a kick high to the left side that is knocked on by Walsh and leads to a penalty to the Melbourne for an obstruction on Coates. The Storm decline the penalty goal and get to work near the goalposts. They get a set restart – and a further one – as Munster weaves left and right.
10th Minute: Back-and-Forth Play
10 mins: Utokiamanu has delivered as promised from the start and his carry from the kickoff enables Harry Grant, then Papenhuyzen, to dart from acting half. Hughes boots from 40 meters and Walsh catches the bomb on his 10-meter line. The Broncos carry reduced thrust in this set and get lucky on the final play when Hunt’s pass to Adam Reynolds goes to ground. Fortunately, the veteran halfback delivers a great kick to force Xavier Coates to retreat and forces the Storm winger to sprint from his in-goal. The Broncos are overzealous with their pursuit, hitting the winger with a high tackle, and Storm can kick for favorable territory.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Broncos (Nick Meaney, 8)
After the scrum, Stefano Utoikamanu powers forward to the 20m line. Next, from fast play off the back, every key Storm player get a touch as they move it out to the right hand side until Meaney cuts inside, runs at an angle at high speed, and carves through a flimsy tackle line to score for an instant reply!
The centre recovers to kick the goal. It's a tied game!
7 mins: Teams Trade Sets
7 mins: Both sides trade conservative sets either side of midfield, but then the Broncos attempt to attack on their left, only to be unable to find Gehamat Shibasaki with the pass. William Warbrick advances quickly and earns a dropped ball for his troubles.
5th Minute: Dream Start for Broncos
5 mins: That is the perfect beginning for the Broncos, taking the lead before Melbourne have even touched the ball, in an attack led by both Haas and Reece Walsh. The Melbourne might feel a little aggrieved at Grant Atkins blowing such an quick infringement, but they were clearly breached by the rapid Brisbane offense.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 0-6 Broncos (Deine Mariner, 3)
Following a long kick, Brisbane begin their attack. Storm concede a six-again for being offside, and quickly the ball is in the red zone. Reece Walsh positions himself? Waiting on the right side, attracting Howarth, holding his position, then somehow passing to Mariner on his wing. The winger steps inside, reaches the line, then just, only just stays in the playing area as he runs around to touchdown beneath the goalposts.
There’s a delay before Reynolds dabs over the goal, but the video official confirms the on-field decision. The venue is erupting to the sound of ecstatic fans.
2 mins: Quick Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Haas, takes the initial carry of the match and the Storm are up sharply… but only a few plays later the Storm concede the first penalty of the night for Harry Grant impeding Haas on the floor. The Broncos immediately in offensive mode.
Kick-off!
