Far-Right Former Legislator J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Focused On Security and Immigration
Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to tackle growing crime and significantly restrict migration.
He frequently cited foreigners, especially the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he issued an stern warning for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.
His policy ideas featured Trump-inspired measures such as building holding facilities, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.

Several observers see Kast's victory as fitting into a broader rightward trend in South America, following recent political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts also frame it as a part of the established swing of power between left and right leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Strong Mandate
Despite his sweeping electoral triumph, Kast will not command an clear majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative landscape could challenge his policy goals, such as a pledge to slash public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a measure for which he has yet to detailed specifics.
"We have many questions about how a Kast government will be that we don't know because he has not said how he will do them," said a political science expert.
