Elections Underway in Holland as Polls Point to Potential Second Victory for Geert Wilders

The polls are open for general elections in Holland, with current polling data indicating that the anti-immigration firebrand Geert Wilders and his PVV party could once again emerge victorious, though analysts suggest the party is unlikely of joining the future coalition.

Survey Results and Election Dynamics

The PVV, which previously achieved a shock top result and established a multi-party all-conservative government that lasted barely a year, is now marginally ahead in surveys and is projected to secure between 24 and 28 seats in the 150-member parliament.

Nevertheless, PVV's support has declined since the previous election, when it secured 37 parliamentary seats. Every significant political group have stated they will not forming a government with the PVV leader, who triggered the fall of the outgoing coalition in June amid disagreements concerning his radical anti-refugee proposals.

Major Parties and Forecasts

At the end of a election period dominated by topics such as migration, healthcare costs, and the nation's acute housing crisis, the centre-left Green Left/Labour party alliance, headed by ex-EU official Frans Timmermans, is running a close second, projected to gain between 22 and 26 seats.

Also performing well is the liberal-progressive Democrats 66, predicted to boost its representation by almost five times to 21-25 seats, while the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDA) is expected to significantly increase its seat tally to between 18 and 22.

Members of the previous government – comprising the PVV, VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all projected to see their representation reduced, with several facing heavy declines.

Voting Process and Political Division

Under the Netherlands' electoral system, gaining just less than one percent of the vote yields a party a seat in parliament. Among the 27 parties participating in the vote – including parties for the over-50s, for youth, animal rights parties, for a universal basic income, and sports parties – as many as 16 could enter the legislature.

This high degree of fragmentation means that no one party is ever likely to secure a majority, and Holland has been ruled by multi-party governments – typically composed of four parties in the last few administrations – for over 100 years.

Government Formation

Wilders has stated that "the democratic process would end" in the Netherlands if the PVV ends up as the largest party yet is excluded from power. However, critics and analysts say that winning the most seats does not guarantee a role in the coalition and that any coalition with a majority is democratically valid.

While the election result is hard to predict and coalition talks may require several months, analysts indicate that after the most radical administration in its recent history, the next Dutch cabinet is likely to be a inclusive coalition headed by either the moderate left or centrist right.

Election Day Details

Voting locations, such as those in the Madurodam model village in The Hague and the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, began operations at 7:30 AM (6:30 GMT) and will conclude at 9pm. A usually accurate exit poll is expected shortly after the polls close.

After the vote, an official negotiator will test possible coalitions that could secure enough support in parliament. Potential partners will then draft a governing pact for the next four years and must face a confidence vote in parliament before taking office.
