Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
